What is The Sift?

The Sift is Minecraft's fourth dimension, standing next to the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Mojang revealed it at Minecraft LIVE on September 26, 2026, after players had already spotted it in footage shown at Gamescom.

Its look is nothing like the dimensions you know. The reveal shows a flat teal sky over fields of coral-pink, blocky vegetation, a red-pink ground plane and pale rock outcrops wrapped in green. Souls drift through the air, small blue creatures hop between the plants, and the terrain is broken up by pools of a thick, warm liquid called ichor.

In the story of Minecraft Dungeons II, the dimension is the source of the crisis: strange events unsettle the Overworld, new enemy types appear and souls begin to fly through the world. The Illagers have invaded the Sift to harvest its resources and souls, and it is up to the heroes to push them back.

Mojang is deliberately keeping the vanilla version vague. Officially confirmed for Minecraft itself is exactly one mob — the Blub — plus a family of new "healthy sculk" blocks. Everything else that has been shown so far comes from Dungeons II and may or may not make the jump into the main game.

Biomes of the Sift

Mojang confirmed two biomes by name — the Meadows and the Carapace — and keeps the rest of the dimension a secret. The Dungeons II version already shows more regions, which is the best preview we have for 2027.

Singer's Meadow: coral-pink coral growth, green patches and a white willow tree under a teal sky

Singer's Meadow · the Meadows

The first thing you see

The entry point of the dimension, and the biome shown in the vanilla reveal. Red sculk beneath tall blue grass, dotted with green flowers, yellow flower patches and pale-blue blossoms. Towering tree-like growths are wrapped in pale-blue vines, and pools of ichor fracture the flatland.

Home of the Singer and its Echo Golems. The Dungeons II tutorial entry "Sift tides" unlocks the first time you step in.

The Carapace: pale sand, giant bone ribs and strange blue walls

The Carapace

Bones and blue walls

A desert-style region dotted with strange blue walls and giant, hollow fossils. Where the Meadow is soft and pink, the Carapace is dry, sharp and eerie — and it is the biome most likely to surprise players in 2027.

Named by Mojang. Full layout still unknown.

Lullaby Hills: layered pink ridges with a dark cave mouth

Lullaby Hills · Echo Den

Undocumented regions

Both exist in the Dungeons II version of the Sift — the hills are named on the dimension's map, the Echo Den is a sub-area. Mojang has shown almost nothing of them, so treat these as unexplored.

Not confirmed for Minecraft itself.

Open questions

What we still don't know

  • ?The exact 2027 release date and update number.
  • ?How you enter the Sift in vanilla Minecraft.
  • ?How many Dungeons II mobs and blocks will make the jump.
  • ?Whether the dimension costs anything.
  • ?How world generation and existing saves will handle a fourth dimension.

Mojang says more will be revealed at upcoming Minecraft LIVE shows.

Blocks & mechanics

The Sift does not just reskin the game — it introduces blocks and rules that change how you build, fight and travel.

Healthy sculk blocks

The vanilla reveal showed a whole family of new sculk variants — green healthy sculk, pink healthy sculk, pink sculk grass blocks and short and tall sculk grass. A living counterpart to the corrupted sculk of the Deep Dark.

Sonorous deepslate & note blocks

In Dungeons II the dimension is opened with the Note Block Machine: a Singer awakens the sonorous deepslate and note blocks are placed on it. Singers use music to open portals — and to pacify Wardens.

Souls in flight

Souls are everywhere in the Sift — they drift through the sky, feed the Illagers' plans and are drained by its hazards. Trills flock through the air like living soul lights, and the Sculk Monstrosity can burst them out in a fight.

Ichor, the hot liquid

A thick, glowing liquid that pools across the dimension and behaves like a trap: it burns anything that steps in and pulls the souls out of it. Sift-native mobs walk straight through.

Rifts & how you get there

Rifts tear open across the Overworld and drop you into the Sift. In Dungeons II the Grand Illusioner can open them on command with his staff; the Deep Dark portal in the Ancient City is the second, more permanent route.

White willow trees

Forests of a brand-new tree: thick dark-grey trunks with white canopies that trail stalactite-like weeping foliage underneath — pale oak energy, but paler still.

Hazard · do not swim

Ichor will take your souls

Ichor is the thick, glowing liquid that pools through the Sift. It looks like a warm bath and behaves like a trap.

  • !It burns. Stepping into ichor sets you alight with soul fire.
  • !It drains. Souls are pulled out of anything that touches it — players included.
  • +Sift natives are immune. The creatures of the dimension walk through it as if it were water.
  • +Blubs love it. The little rabbit-like mobs happily bathe in ichor.

Fun detail: the developer name for ichor was "ouch water" until very late in development. The Spectral Spear's item description claims the weapon was "forged in ichor", which suggests the liquid may also be a crafting material — much like lava in the Nether.

Creatures of the Sift

Officially named for vanilla Minecraft: one. The Blub. Everything else on this list is confirmed from the Minecraft Dungeons II version of the dimension and shows the direction the Sift is going — not a promise for 2027.

Blub

Passive · pet

A small blue creature that hops like a rabbit, squeaks and is described as soft and squishy. It likes to bathe in ichor and is the mascot of the dimension — and the Deluxe Edition pet in Dungeons II.

Singer

Character · lore

Pale green body, shaggy fur, tiny faces on an elongated neck and pale antlers. Singers communicate through song, awaken the sonorous deepslate to open portals, and are said to be able to pacify Wardens.

Echo Golem

Passive

Golems animated by soul blocks created by the Singers. Instead of attacking you they help heroes move through the story — the friendly face of the dimension's oldest magic.

Trill

Passive · flying

Groups of small flying entities that drift through the sky of the Sift, giving the air that strange, living-souls feeling the reveal footage is full of.

Sifters

Hostile · melee & ranged

A whole family: Baby Sifters bite, Bearded Sifters spit homing projectiles from their chin, Tall Sifters lob explosive shots that leave damaging goo. Snout and Antenna Sifters round out the variants.

Nester

Hostile · melee

Bounds at heroes the moment it spots them, lunges in for a bite, then circles at close range while its attack cools down. Relentless rather than clever.

Seedling & Sprout

Hostile

Seedlings grow on the ground, Sprouts hover and attack from the air with tentacle-like limbs. Both make the Sift's vegetation feel like it is watching you.

Sift Sheep & Licker

Passive

Sift Sheep are the dimension's wool supply in Dungeons II. The Licker does exactly what its name says — that is, that is everything we know about it so far.

Monarch

Boss · Dungeons II

One of the three bosses of the Sift. Its Monarchlings guard it, and it rules over the dimension's insect-like hierarchy.

Sculk Monstrosity

Boss · Dungeons II

A shoulder-charging monster that bursts out souls and summons rolling Sculk Cubes. Fought in the Singer's Meadow, and the closest thing to a sculk Warden the Sift has.

Harmonizer

Boss · Dungeons II

The third boss of the dimension, tied to the Sift's music-and-song theme. As with the Monarch, Mojang has kept the details of the encounter under wraps.

Other threats

Hostile

Groobler and Crested Sentinels, Sculk Slashers that dash backwards leaving spectral afterimages, a Sculk Dancer mini-boss with spinning AoE attacks — plus the Illagers who invaded the dimension for its souls.

FAQ

The Sift: frequently asked questions

Short answers, only what is actually confirmed — and a clear label when something is still unknown.

What is The Sift in Minecraft?

The Sift is Minecraft's fourth dimension, alongside the Overworld, the Nether and the End. It was revealed at Minecraft LIVE in September 2026 and described as a soul-rich world of red and orange stone, green vegetation, sculk blocks and pools of ichor. Mojang's own wording: an uncharted dimension of threats, mysteries and breathtaking beauty.

When does The Sift release?

The Sift launches first inside Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29, 2026. For Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition Mojang has confirmed a 2027 release window — no exact day, no update number, no price announced yet.

Which platforms get The Sift?

In Dungeons II: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, included with Game Pass on day one and supporting Xbox Play Anywhere.

For Minecraft itself the Sift arrives as part of the game in 2027, which covers Java and Bedrock Edition on Windows, macOS, Linux, consoles, mobile and cloud.

How do you enter The Sift?

In Dungeons II there are two routes: the Deep Dark portal activated with the Note Block Machine, and dimensional rifts that the Grand Illusioner can open with his staff.

How players will enter the Sift in vanilla Minecraft has not been revealed. The obvious candidate is the Deep Dark portal that has been sitting in the Ancient City since the Wild Update — but Mojang has not confirmed it.

Which mobs live in The Sift?

Officially confirmed for vanilla Minecraft so far: the Blub, a small passive creature that glows, hops and squeaks.

For the Dungeons II version, the dimension adds Sifters, Nesters, Seedlings, Sprouts, Sift Sheep, Echo Golems, Lickers and Trills, with the Monarch, the Sculk Monstrosity and the Harmonizer as bosses. Not all of these are expected in the main game.

What is ichor in The Sift?

Ichor is the thick, multicoloured liquid that pools across the dimension. It sets you alight with soul fire and drains your souls, while Sift-native mobs are immune. Mojang's developers called it "ouch water" internally until very late in development, and the Spectral Spear is said to have been "forged in ichor".

Is The Sift paid DLC or a free update?

Unknown. Mojang has not announced a price, a DLC pack or a version requirement for the Sift in Minecraft. Every dimension added to Minecraft so far — the Nether and the End — shipped as part of a regular game update, which is why most players expect the same here.

Will The Sift look the same in Minecraft as in Dungeons II?

Probably not identical. Dungeons II is an action RPG with its own combat systems, bosses and level design, and it already contains content that never appeared in vanilla Minecraft. Mojang has said it wants each dimension to have a functional reason to exist, and that it will show more of the Sift's vanilla form at future Minecraft LIVE events.
